MAP@PLAZA opens exhibitions of European and American Por Art

San Juan, Puerto Rico – The walls of MAP@PLAZA, the venue of Museo de Arte de Ponce at the Plaza Las Américas shopping mall in San Juan, will be filled with colors and interesting shapes beginning May 7, with the opening of the exhibitions Pop Art in the collection of IVAM and Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, which will feature around 70 of the most important European and American Pop Art works.

Pop Art in the collection of IVAM is an exhibition conceded to and with the commissariat of Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM). The selection of works to be exhibited at MAP@PLAZA includes paintings, sculptures, engravings and photographs created prior to 1949 –before the movement received its name in England during the early 1950´s- through the year 2000. Around 27 artists from Spain, England, Germany, France and the United States are represented in this show. Among them, the following can be highlighted: Eduardo Arroyo, Alberto Greco, Richard Hamilton, Jasper Johns, Yves Klein, Claes Oldenburg, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, James Rosenquist, Cindy Sherman and the groups Equipo Crónica and Equipo Realidad.

The CEO and Director of Museo de Arte de Ponce, Agustín Arteaga, Ph.D, explained that Pop Art in the collection of IVAM “is one of the most relevant Pop Art collections in Europe and the most important one in Spain. Our museum feels very satisfied of being able to show this broad selection of fundamental art works , which will help our visitors to understand better the magnitude and international importance of this significant artistic movement”.

On the other hand, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, organized by Museo de Arte de Ponce, will show at the project room of MAP@PLAZA twelve works by the two pioneers of Pop Art. Some of the works that will be a part of the parallel show will be the iconic series of engravings of Campbell’s Soup by Warhol, and Woman: Sunlight, Moonlight by Lichtenstein, among others. This exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein, the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, Jordan Schnitzer, the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation and Fundación Ángel Ramos.

In reference to the simultaneous presentation of both exhibitions at MAP@PLAZA, Arteaga added that it will also allow the public to get to know better “the differences and parallelisms in the development of Pop Art in diverse countries and among different generations of artists. Furthermore, they will learn the cultural, ideological and artistic impact of such movement and its prevalence in the contemporary field”.

Pop Art in the collection of IVAM will remain open to the public through August 10 and will be accompanied by a hard cover and bilingual catalogue (Spanish- English) published by IVAM, which will be available at the museum’s shop. Meanwhile, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol will be on view until August 31.

As part of these exhibitions, the Department of Education at the museum, has organized a broad itinerary of activities including workshops, special tours, film screenings, and talks, among others.
