The Cuban visual Arts reflect not only the artists’
universe but also depict the reality of other worlds. Through
their cultural space, they confirm their uniqueness. The Caribbean
islands, whether or not independent or recently emancipated,
present a precarious economical situation, which is partly
linked to colonization.
This phenomenon has an intrinsic effect on these countries’
cultural policies where a lack of funding imposes recourse
to grants from international institutions in order to sustain
their artistic creation. The Cuban artistic creation stands
out by its contemporary expression. Geographic and economic
isolation do not hinder the artists from participating to
international artistic scene and its actuality. This commitment
grants Cuban Art the same exposure as Art in Western countries
even though globalization tends to standardize aesthetic,
sometimes to the detriment of creative identity.
The exhibition featured at Intemporel proposes, through the
presence of three Cuban artists, a view of the broad creative
scene of visual arts in Cuba. Lester Cadalso, worked on the
theme of kids and childhood in his oeuvre, as a starting point
for his aesthetic and social statements, which he continues
to explore through different subjects. Rigoberto Mena, has
a consistent career immersed in abstraction, and explores
a complex visual world, with a renewed and creative freedom.
On his part, Luis Enrique Camejo, shows a poetic and suggestive
reality that rises from the intimate and urban universe that
surrounds him.
These three creators represent richness and diversity in current
Cuban creation, given through the plurality of themes and
styles.
