- Cuenca: A Biennial on the Banks of the Tomebamba

The Cuenca International Biennial which until 2004 was circumscribed in the field of painting incorporated since that year other artistic expressions such as installations, art objects, photography and video. In its ninth edition, the focus theme was “Identity times-spaces” to show a controversial interaction between these categories in contemporary cities mostly from the western hemisphere. José Manuel Noceda analyzes in his text, the works presented, the different sites used, the awards given, and the new challenges it faces. Read the review

- Daniel Birnbaum nominated as curator at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Italy

The Board of Directors of the Fondazione la Biennale di Venezia, chaired
by Paolo Baratta, held a meeting on 7th April 2008 in which it nominated Daniel Birnbaum as Director of the Visual Arts Sector, with specific responsibility as curator of the 53rd International Art Exhibition. Read the news



- Graciela Iturbide wins the 2008 Hasselblad Award. Sweden

The Hasselblad Foundation has chosen Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide to be the recipient of the 2008 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. The prize, consisting of SEK 500,000 (approximately USD 80,000) and a gold medal, will be presented at a ceremony held in Göteborg, Sweden, October 25, 2008. Read more

Call for entries

- The Abraaj Capital Prize 2009. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Recognized curators from any nationality are invited to submit one or more proposals for separate exhibitions with individual artists currently working in the Middle East, North Africa or South Asia. Each successful proposal will receive up to $200,000 to include production costs, transport and travel for both curator and artist. Included in the budget will be a fee of $15,000 for the curator. The final exhibitions will be shown at Art Dubai in March 2009. Read more


- X Caixanova International Engraving Biennale. Ourense, Spain

The call for the X Caixanova International Engraving Biennale is underway for the Julio Prieto Nespereira Award. Engravers of any nationality may apply.
Each engraver may submit up to two never-before-exhibited original works that have not been previously presented for other competitions. The deadline for receipt of all submissions is June 30, 2008. Read more
