Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium at
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

Britt Salvesen, curator of The Perfect Medium, talks about Robert Mapplethorpe and the works featured in this exhibition, which explores the conceptual core of the artist’s work through early drawings from Mapplethorpe’s student period, collages, sculptures, Polaroid photographs, materials from his personal archive, and rare, seldom displayed items.

The curator underscores Mapplethorpe’s return to three subjects throughout his career, all of them engaged by many artists across history: portraiture, still life’s with flowers, and studies of the body (nudes and sexualized figures). Yet, she notes the unique characteristics of Mapplethorpe’s approach, which make his work immediately identifiable. The video closes with the presentation of an installation reassembled especially for this show. An early work, difficult to obtain, since the artist often took apart his installations and reused the materials.

The exhibition will remain open through July 31st, 2016.
