Mona Hatoum
TateShots visited the artist during the installation of her first large exhibition at Tate Modern. The exhibition, which will remain open to the public through August 21, 2016, reviews a career spanning 35 years, presenting early performances and videos, sculptures, and large-scale installations.

In this video, Hatoum explains her selection of materials, an intuitive process of choosing those that seduce and resonate for her. Talking about what drives her, the artist acknowledges a strong fixation on industrial and structural materials and elements used in construction, characteristic of architecture. About her residencies and exhibitions, she underscores the time she spends in markets and shops everywhere where she exhibits, looking for objects she will incorporate into her art.

Hatoum explains that she travels often and always brings notebooks with her to document her work. She refers back to her notebooks in order to reengage with never-completed projects and to refresh concepts that she wants to continue exploring in different ways than before.
