Medellín, Colombia

On March 20 at 8 pm, Teleantioquia, a public broadcasting television company in Colombia, will air the first episode of the miniseries titled Débora, la Mujer que Desnudó a Colombia (Débora, the Woman Who Undressed Colombia) based on the life of Colombian painter Débora Arango (Medellin, 1907– Envigado, 2005).

Débora Arango was a controversial artist ahead of her time, something that makes her stand out from other painters of her generation. A world full of obstacles, majesty, and challenges enveloped the life of Débora Arango from the moment she passionately immersed herself into the world of the arts. Her career was never constrained by boundaries as she sought equal rights for women and no censorship attempts by society, the church, and the political structure were ever able to stop her.

In order to successfully convey to new generations Arango's courageous, talented, magical, inspiring, and defiant spirit, the Teleantioquia Regional Channel developed the finely crafted series Débora, la Mujer que Desnudó a Colombia directed by Rodolfo Hoyos-Vivas and starring Patricia Castañeda as Débora Arango. The series showcases the life and work of the Colombian painter, a pioneer in new ways of seeing and creating art in Colombia and a transgressor of the socio-cultural norms of her time.

The ten episode series, each 24 minutes long, captures the talent, struggles and achievements of an artist born in the Department of Antioquia, Colombia, who left an indelible mark for the delight of those who follow her artistic and social legacy.

The story unfolds mainly in Santa Fe de Antioquia, El Retiro, and Medellin. The show recreates some of the defining episodes that Arango experienced in Bogota, Mexico, and Madrid during the 20th century.

This poignant television series will introduce new generations to the achievements and struggles that Débora Arango had to face during her artistic career and that earned her the status of a "heroine" whose only weapon was the brush.

The series Débora, la Mujer que Desnudó a Colombia is a source of pride for Teleantioquia, the Instituto de Cultura y Patrimonio de Antioquia, the Colombian government, and the National Television Authority of Colombia; entities that believed in the production of this great audiovisual project that pays tribute to Arango while also underscoring the artistic talents of those who participated in the series.

Débora, la Mujer que Desnudó a Colombia can be watched online at the homepage of Teleantioquia: http://www.teleantioquia.co/. Plans are being considered to sell it to other platforms.
