Call Monument to Peace

Monument to Peace
Ministry of Culture

Bogotá, Colombia

The call "Monument to Peace" will remain open from March 22 to April 19, 2018. It invites artists to participate with monument proposals from which a winning proposal will be selected and erected in the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

With the purpose of fulfilling the constitutional mandate provided in article 22 of the Political Constitution of Colombia, which states that "Peace is a right and a duty whose compliance is mandatory," on November 24, 2016 the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) reached a Final Agreement to End the Armed Conflict and Build a Stable and Lasting Peace. The signing of the Final Agreement opened a wide-ranging and inclusive process in Colombia mainly centered on the rights of the victims of the armed conflict. As an essential part of the process, the Colombian Government must implement the points included in the Final Agreement.

Point 3 of the "Final Agreement to End the Armed Conflict and Build a Stable and Lasting Peace" stipulated the following: Part of the weaponry laid down by the FARC-EP will be used by an artist, or a constituted group, to create a monument that will be placed in the sculpture garden of the headquarters of the UN in New York.

The 1716 Decree from October 20, 2017, in paragraph 3 of article 1, stipulated the following:

"Paragraph 3. 'Final disposal' is understood as the technical procedure headed by the Ministry of Culture whereby the armament and ammunition found in the deposits (coves) of the extinct FARC-EP will be used for the construction of three monuments, in accordance with the provisions in point 3.2.7. of the Final Agreement. For the purpose of this paragraph, the Ministry of Defense, in coordination with Law Enforcement, shall make the disabled material available to the Ministry of Culture."

As result of the above-mentioned, the Ministry of Culture of Colombia opens its call "Monument to Peace" with the purpose of selecting the artist who will create the monument that will be placed in the UN headquarters in New York City.

With this purpose in mind, the call is open to Colombian artists and international artists (who have been residing in Colombia for more than five years). Candidates must have previously created at least two (2) three-dimensional works in public spaces and have at least three (3) years of professional experience.

The Ministry of Culture of Colombia will award one (1) prize of eighty million Colombian pesos (COL$ 80,000,000.00) to the winning artist. Likewise, two hundred million Colombian pesos (COL$ 200,000,000.00) will be allocated for the creation of the Monument.
