Quito, Ecuador

On June 25, Adrián Balseca was selected as the winner of the 2018 Video Art Production Award granted by the Fundación Han Nefkens and CAC-Quito for the production of a video art work.

The jury that met at the Fundación Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona was formed by: Han Nefkens, founder of the Fundación Han Nefkens; Eduardo Carrera, head curator of the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito; Pablo León de la Barra, curator for Latin America at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; Miguel A. López, co-director and head curator of TEOR/éTica in Costa Rica; and Jorge Fernandez-Torres, director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana. Deliberations occurred in the presence of Hilde Teerlinck, director of the Fundación Han Nefkens; Belen Santillán, director of the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito; and Alessandra Biscaro, coordinator of the production awards program of the Fundación Han Nefkens.

The award aims to promote the international projection of video art and encouraging its creation among artists born in Latin America. The award consists of a purse of US $15,000.00 to be used in the production of an artwork that must be completed in the period of one year. A copy of the work will be included in the collection of the Fundación Han Nefkens. The work will be featured in the exhibition titled "Over the Clouds: Videos from the Han Nefkens Foundation" at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito during the summer of 2019. The show will also feature work by Maya Watanabe, winner of the 2018 Han Nefkens Foundation–ARCO Madrid Award.

At a later time, the new work by Adrián Balseca will also be shown in international platforms that are part of the exhibition network in which the Fundación Han Nefkens participates. Lastly, the piece will be donated to an international museum.

Adrián Balseca (Quito, 1989) has participated in a number of solo shows and group exhibitions and has received several recognitions, including: the 2014-2015 Mariano Aguilera National New Arts Award granted by the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (CAC-Quito); the 2015 Grants & Commissions Program in the category of emerging artist, granted by the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) in Miami; and the Paris Award of the 12th International Cuenca Biennial: Leaving to Return.

Adrián Balseca is currently completing a residency in the 5th cycle of Residencies Programme of the NTU Center for Contemporary Art Singapore.
