Art and Patronage Awards, La Caixa

Madrid, Spain

The Art and Patronage Awards organized by the Fundación Bancaria La Caixa in recent days announced at CaixaForum Madrid the winners of the eighth edition of the event. Planned for the month of October, the award ceremony will give every winner a sculpture by Maquel Barceló specially created for the foundation.

Granted for the first time in 2011, these awards aim at recognizing and encouraging the various links that form the chain of the art world, their contributions, as well as "creating referents," said Elisa Durán, deputy general director of the Fundación Bancaria La Caixa. Therefore, the awards recognize an author per se, a gallery—its role as intermediary between the creator and society—and a patron—his/her role as driving force and motor for the creation. The foundation also plays its own role as patron by awarding 90,000.00 euros, which are divided between the categories of artist and gallery owner.

For this eighth edition of the Art and Patronage Awards, the jury was formed by artist Ignasi Aballí, the head of Art Collections of the Fundación Bancaria La Caixa Nimfa Bisbe; art historian and gallerist Guillermo de Osma; the director of Bombas Gens Centre d'Art, Nuria Enguita; curator and director of the Instituto de Arte de la Academia de Artes y Diseño FHNW in Basel (Switzerland), Chus Martínez; founder of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC), Patricia Phelps; director of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea of the Fundação Serralves (Museo Serralves), João Ribas; director of ARCOmadrid, Carlos Urroz; and art collector Juan Várez. The jury granted awards in the categories of "Artist," "Gallerist," and "Patron" to:

In the "Artist" category the award went to Dora García (Valladolid, 1965). This award consists of a purse of 50,000.00 euros, 20,000.00 of which are allocated for the production of an artist book. In the opinion of the jury, García has all the qualities that the award wants to showcase: "Her artistic production exemplifies creative excellence; she has presented her work in important contexts, both in Spain and abroad, has contributed to renovating the artistic languages and immersed herself into themes and issues that she approaches.

In the "Gallerist" category, and with a purse of 40,000.00 euros for the creation of a project that contributes to the positioning and recognition of the gallery at the local and international levels, the award was granted to Espaivisor, in Valencia. Founded as the Galería Visor in 1982 by Pep Benlloch, since 2006 Espaivisor has been directed by Mira Bernabeu and Miriam Lozano, and the institution has evolved into a model that has gained great recognition and made it stand out for its international activity, particularly in Ibero-America and Eastern countries.

In the "Patron" category, the jury granted the award to the Fundación Rosón Arte Contemporáneo (RAC) for its "extraordinary quality and its transformative ability and innovating proposal." Founded in 2007 by Galician architect and art collector Carlos Rosón and his wife Julieta Rojo, the goal of this foundation is to support art and culture through projects and activities that encourage artistic creation and its promotion, both in the Galician context as well as on the Spanish and International stages.
